Task 2.3.1
Collaboration Workspace
Demonstration Session

Technologies

  • CORK: Content Object Replication Kit
  • CORK-based collaborative components
    • Synchronous text editor, whiteboard, mapping tools, chat objects, threaded discussions, data and charting tools
  • BRIDGE: Basic Resources for Integrated Distributed Group Environments
    • Toolkit for putting together components, based on experiences building several CORK-based environments
    • Web access infrastructure; versioning, awareness, and notification tools
    • Textual composition, for publication and archiving
    • Graphical composition, for collaborative markup
    • Interactive composition, for focused collaboration

Troubleshooting Scenario

Two users are meeting online to discuss a problem with a pump. The particular problem they are seeing is not documented in the pump manuals, so they would like for the results of their troubleshooting efforts to be made available to others.

They can interact within a BRIDGE workspace using chat for communication, annotating an image of the pump on a shared whiteboard, and documenting the problem in a shared text editor.

Here's a link to the live workspace, and screenshots taken on Mac OSX and Windows.

Flexible Interactive Composition Modes

  • WYSIWIS Workspace intended for focused activity
  • Individual objects can be launched for smaller activities
    • E.g., a chat session (live/shot) for scheduled discussion or whiteboard (live/shot) to augment a voice conference
    • User lists shows who else is using the object
    • As with workspace, supports "invitation by URL"
  • "Full Editor" provides an alternate view (screen shot)
    • Access to a larger data space and more authoring options
    • Less passive awareness detail, with support for switching to focused interaction
  • BRIDGE provides abstractions for many other possibilities
    • E.g., specialized fixed compositions, collaborative tools "bolted onto" other tools, Digital Ship applications
    • Part of Year 4 effort is designing end-user tools for construction
