Scenario:
Lieutenant Nolan is in the middle of his surface warfare officer (SWO) tour on the USS Ship deployed to the Indian Ocean. He has been trying to work a shore posting in his primary skill as a Navy dive officer. He wants to talk to his detailer in Arlington, Virginia about some assignment possibilities.
Lt Nolan uses the Internet to navigate to the Navy Annex and eventually locates his detailer's office. This web page shows office-waiting areas for several detailers (this exists only in the virtual space--in reality, the detailers sit in a desk among many other detailers, and there is no waiting area.) Lt Nolan sees two detailers for dive officers and notices that one is on leave and the other, Lt Arthur, has scheduled chat sessions from 1000 to 1200 EST and again from 1500-1600, and he has a signup list for each session. Lt Arthur realizes he will be on watch during both sessions, so he signs up for each session, #6 at 1000 and #2 at 1500. Since he cannot be at a computer to monitor the chat progress, he creates a user proxy to watch both lists. He prescribes the list watching proxy to alert him when he is the first waiting person on either list. In addition charters the proxy to include list metrics in his notification. Finally, he ties the proxy's alert options to the ship's personal alerting system.
At 1130 Lt Nolan's personal alerting device activates with a message from his user proxy that he is now at the top of the list and that the list has been moving at an average pace of once every 18 minutes, minimum 7 minutes, maximum 28 minutes. With this information, Lt Nolan arranges a substitute for his watch on the bridge and proceeds to his stateroom.
A few minutes later Lt Nolan and Lt Arthur are discussing Lt Nolan's upcoming assignment. They switch from written messages to voice interaction over the Internet. Lt Arthur adds an object to the list of tools available to the chat session. Lt Nolan clicks on this tool and quickly has access to a whiteboard tool with a listing of all the Lt assignments being worked by the detailers. Lt Arthur draws a circle around the four postings he thinks Lt Nolan is qualified for. Lt Nolan marks a question mark next to two other assignments he is interested in. Lt Arthur explains he is not qualified for one of them and the second one is a long shot. He puts a circle around the second one so now five assignments are marked. Lt Nolan annotates "1", "2", and "3" beside his top choices. Lt Arthur says he should be able to get at least one of the three choices. Lt Arthur erases the other marks on the whiteboard, prints a copy of this page for Lt Nolan's folder, and saves the page to disk for future reference. Lt Nolan does the same, and they end their conversation.
As a final clean-up action, Lt Nolan removes his name from the second session. Immediately he receives a screen alert from his user proxy indicating there are no longer valid conditions to monitor. Lt Nolan responds with the option that terminates the user proxy.
