Thursday, July 10, 2003, Torgersen 3180 (1:35-2:40 pm)

  • Next Meeting: Tuesday, July 29, Torgersen 3180 (1:00 pm)
  • Attendees: Jack, Con, Scott McCrickard, Jacob Sommervell, Manuel Pérez-Quiñones
  • Scott presented a chalk talk on the context in which Jacob is developing his class content

    • Scott discussed this as a process for instructors to select case methodologies based on learning objectives
    • There was considerable discussion about the step to classify the learning objectives as mainly reflecting design, engineering, or science. This may be a simple selection or it may involve a more complex transformation based on several, sometimes competing, learning objectives
    • There was also discussion about selection of case method. This step may invovle considerations beyond the classification of learning objective, such as the experience of the class, previous cases used by the class, instructor familiarity with the cases, and so on.
    • This process may be a specification of a more general organizing for learning process. Classifications of learning objectives (for example, Bloom's Taxonomy) may also provide insight at a more general level.
    • By mid-August Jacob and Scott hope to have a paper that summarizes their results.
