Case Studies: Meetings
Friday, May 9, 2003, Torgersen 3180 (2:50-4:35 pm)
- Next Meeting: Thursday, May 15, Torgersen 3180 (1:30 pm)
- Followed by Summer Workshop 2003, May 22 & 23
- Attendees: Mary Beth, Jack, Con
- Mary Beth and Jack are in town through the workshop (except Jack's gone this coming Wed.)
- Workshop
- Workshop Preparations
- Mary Beth will prepare a demo of the current case study library with at least two activities [Action: Mary Beth]
- Jack to prepare introductory/opening remarks
- Con to complete the case study literature survey in time to send to participants [Action: Con]
- Con to send out e-mail to participants and interested members [Action: Con]
- Ask them what sorts of examples they can bring to the workshop in the area of activities, cases, evaluation, etc.
- Find out if they have used the tool
- Get some demographic information and releasability
- Con to track action items at the workshop [Action: Con]
- Outcomes for workshop:
- Participants 'bought in' to do something with the case study library next academic year
- Identify how to facilitate this
- Determine how to collect and share evaluation of outcomes
- Literature Survey
- Content
- We can mostly make do with the material we have already identified. Jack thinks this is around 30 sources. If we only get it 80% right is will still be effective to tease out input from people who would otherwise not contribute
- Use a library search on cognitive literature
- See e-mail on stages of knowing
- Distinguish example-based from case-based (or are they part of the same thing?)
- This literature survey will be Con's #1 activity prior to the workshop. Con to check with Jonathan to see if he can help out without impacting his ongoing work on Tapped-In [Action: Con, Status: Complete (Jonathan needs all available time to work Tapped-In)]
- Theory
- Add to taxonomy of activities: Close Process
- Finish this out to it's proper/logical conclusion
- Differs from extension which includes the idea of an added requirement of some sort
- Project Direction
- Jack suggested we consider a survey of the CHI Educators group. Look at instructor efficacy through a survey of teaching of HCI. Construct this instrument over the summer.
- Need to capture this and other inputs to project direction [Action: Con]
- Web Site
- Con asked everyone to review the web site and give him comments concerning how it might need to change to support the project next academic year [Action: ALL]
- CS 3724 Surveys
- Con shared an initial cut at consolidating the survey results. The list was by student. Mary Beth requested a version by homework assignment. [Action: Con, Status: Completed]
- Case Study Contributors
- It will be useful to have a fallback position when asking someone to contribute a case study. If they are unable or unwilling to contribute an entire development experience, then fall back to asking for an incomplete case segment. This may help alleviate concerns about releasability, potential liability, appropriateness, etc.
- (03.28) Possible game contacts. Jack's student contact expressed initial interest and optimism but has now graduated. This is a write-off.
- (03.28) Debbie Hix was interested but unable to come up with any virtual environment cases. This is a write-off.
