Setup and Login

Accounts

We'll (hopefully) eventually be integrated with the VT PID database and single sign-on mechanism, but until then you can send email to isenhour@vt.edu if you need an additional account set up. (See the Security page for information on setting up temporary accounts for student assistants.)

If you need to change your password or reset a forgotten password, links for these are available under the "Tools" section on http://java.cs.vt.edu/.

Web Access

All materials are web accessible, and most objects can also be edited online. Basic text pages, for example, can be edited (wiki-style) by clicking the "Web Editor" link at the bottom of each page. As far as we know this should generally work from any browser. Note that we do not currently support session timeout, so if you are on a public machine you might want to use the (rather clunky) logout link at the bottom of each page when you are finished.

Interactive Editing

All objects support synchronous interactive editing via a Java client launched with WebStart. If you are running OSX (10.1 or higher), WebStart is already installed. Windows and Linux users may need to download WebStart from Sun (http://java.sun.com/products/javawebstart/) and install it in order to use the interactive client. For maximum compatibility across platforms, we currently target JDK 1.3.1 on the client, so for best results you probably want to install WebStart version 1.0.2, which includes a 1.3 runtime.

The client can be launched from the "Full Editor" link at the bottom of the page.
